Pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic aspects of gastroretentive dosage forms.
Controlled release gastroretentive dosage forms (CR-GRDF) enable prolonged and continuous input of the drug to the upper parts of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract and improve the bioavailability of medications that are characterized by a narrow absorption window. CR-GRDF provide a means to utilize all the pharmacokinetic (PK) and pharmacodynamic (PD) advantages of controlled release dosage forms...
متن کاملStrategies for the Bioequivalence Assessment of Topical Dermatological Dosage Forms
The pharmacokinetic approach used for the BE assessment of systemically absorbed drugs is not considered appropriate to study the bioavailability (BA) and/or BE of topically applied drugs other than dosage forms such as transdermal patches and other products intended for local application which contain drugs intended for the systemic circulation. Apart from the analytical difficulty of measurin...
متن کاملTopically applied minoxidil in baldness.
Minoxidil, an orally administered, peripheral vasodilator used to treat hypertension, causes hypertrichosis in more than 80% of users. The drug reduces elevated blood pressure by decreasing peripheral vascular resistance. Chemically, minoxidil i s 2,4-diamino-6-piperidinopyrimidine-3-oxide; it is soluble in water to the extent of approximately 2 mg/ml, i s more readily soluble in propylene glyc...
متن کاملDesign and feasibility assessment of topically applied drug formulations for electroporation.
Few studies have been reported on the design of topical formulations consisting of electrodes and active drugs for electroporation as a means to increase skin permeability of the drugs, although many studies were reported for the effect of this physical means using aqueous drug solutions. We, therefore, designed a prototypic reservoir and matrix topical formulations that are suitable for electr...
متن کاملSystemic absorption of topically applied chloramphenicol eyedrops.
Five children under the age of 9 years had topical chloramphenicol drops administered 2-hourly to each eye for 5 to 7 days. Systemic absorption was not detected by 2 sensitive assays for the drug. The hazards of topical chloramphenicol and reports in the current literature are discussed.
